ENSEMBLE IMPROVISATION WORKSHOP

September 7th, 2 - 8pm. $90

Open Flight Studio, 4205 University Way N.

Join members of AVID and delve into the world of ensemble improvisation. In this daylong workshop, we will play with gradients of touch, energetic connections, and an expansive view of relating through space and time to tune group sensibility. We will play with the balance of honoring individual impulses while holding the container of the group and explore ways to develop our choices with consideration to potential viewers. Incorporating elements from Contact Improvisation, Viewpoints, and Ensemble Thinking, AVID will share tools from our long-standing practice together in the pursuit of dynamic and satisfying solo, partnered, and group improvisation. The workshop will be facilitated by company members, Scott Davis, Aiko Kinoshita, Rachael Lincoln, Aaron Swartzman, and Tamin Totzke.

SFDI Performance

AUGUST 2, 2-2:45pm

VELOCITY DANCE CENTER

AVID minus Rachael performed a 45 minute set loosely working with some of the ideas developed in our Italy Residency.

It was nice to follow up our more tightly scored performance on Vashon the weekend before and allow those ideas to be present in a looser way.  Performing more is good for improvising in performance.

PERFORMANCE AT JOAN HANNA'S BARN

JULY 28, 7:30 pm

Working with ideas such as collective breath, flocking while one performer drops out into solo, and narrative text, we performed two short sets out at Joan Hanna's barn on Vashon as part of a contemplative dance practice weekend. We were joined by kids on stage!

AVID does ITALY!!!

OPEN STUDIO #40 at On the Boards
April 21, 3:30 pm

End of April consisted of two sets of live dance-making in which members of AVID presented their collaborative performance practice.  The practice is a dynamic ecosystem of solo, partner, and ensemble dancing that may include: athletic partnering, nonlinear theatrical components, emotional outbursts, patient transformations, explosive redirections, and sustained pauses. Open Studio provided an opportunity for our ongoing inquiry into the effects of an audience on this intimate ensemble practice; can we stay spacious with our choice-making under the higher-stakes sensation of being witnessed? Can we derail notions of “right” and “wrong” choices and instead rely on our practice of togetherness? Will reading our own group ecology of trust, generosity, and humanness translate to something meaningful to watch?

CREATIVE / PROCESS SERIES III: PERFORMANCE AS PRACTICE / PRACTICE AS PERFORMANCE with AVID

WEDS APR 4–MAY 9 / 6PM–7:30PM

Join AVID to delve into the world of ensemble improvisation. Sourcing from our own bodies and each other, we will explore solo, duet, and group scores, both with and without a compositional lens. This series draws from our work practice as performance, performance as practice where the rigor lies in honing group connection as a means to push our own physical, theatrical, and energetic edges. Can we thread in complex impulses and desires while holding the container of the group? What changes when we are witnessed? Classwork will include elements of contact improvisation, contemplative practices, and scores devised to identify and expand our choice making.
